Parts We Carry

Westchester's houses cluster around a 1957 build date, which puts most of the original garages at a single-car width with a steel or wood panel door hung on torsion springs sized for that narrower opening. That's a different animal from the two-car doors going up in newer subdivisions. We carry torsion springs in the sizes that fit those older single-car openings, along with the shorter tracks and lighter-gauge hinges those doors were built with. Rollers on doors this age are usually the original steel type, not nylon, and they're often the first thing to start grinding.

Across the wider area we cover from Wilmette, the housing runs from 1938 to 1992 with a lot of it dating to the 1960s and 70s, so we stock parts for a spread of eras, not just one. Westchester sits on the older end of that range. If your opener is original to the house, it likely predates the safety-reversal sensors required on newer units, and we won't reinstall a door without those sensors in place. That's not a Westchester-specific rule, it's a safety one, but it comes up more here because more of the openers are original.

Good to Know

Questions, answered

Are parts for a 1950s garage door hard to find?

Torsion springs and steel rollers sized for the older single-car openings common in Westchester aren't something we improvise. We carry those sizes because we see them often enough in this part of the service area. What we won't do is force a modern part into hardware it wasn't built for.

Do you have a branch in Westchester?

No. We're based in Wilmette, about 18 miles away, and we drive out to Westchester for jobs. There's no local depot here, just a truck that comes from Wilmette when you call.

Will an opener from the 1950s or 60s meet current safety standards?

Not usually. Original openers from that era typically lack the photo-eye safety reversal sensors required on units made after the mid-1990s. We won't reinstall or service a door without those sensors present, regardless of how old the rest of the setup is.
